Jewellers call off strike on excise duty rollback hope

Protesting jewelry makers today stated that they will take a decision on their indefinite stir tomorrow after meeting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the matter of rollback in augmented taxes.
In the meantime, a delegacy of jewelry makers headed by RJD President Lalu Prasad met Mr. Mukherjee.
The Finmin has promised the delegacy of "encouraging" action shortly Prasad stated after the conference.
Jewelry makers in different parts of India have been on a stir since March 17 to protest the increase in import duty on gold and load of excise duty on unbranded jewelry.
The proposal was announced during Mukherjee's Budget speech for the fiscal 2012-13.
The stir made entry in the 20th day today.
Mr. Mukherjee has called a gathering with spokespersons of jewelers from key cities tomorrow in the national capital.
Delhi Jewelry makers and Goldsmith Association President Ram Avtar Verma stated that jewelry makers will settle on whether to end the stir or not after meeting the finmin.
"We appreciate the assurance of a positive action by the Finance Minister to the agitating bullion traders and are hopeful of an early solution to the crisis," he added.
